日独交流150周年 静岡・ブレーメン国際交流PROJECT

Shizuoka-Bremen Art Exchange Exhibition

An art exchange exhibition is to be organized by artists living in Shizuoka and artists living in Bremen. The word ‘’encounter’’ forms the bones of this project, in which events are designed to make a country ‘‘encounter’’ another country, a city ‘‘encounter’’ another city, a home ‘‘encounter’’ another home, an object ‘‘encounter’’ another object, and a person ’‘encounter’’ another person.

In our daily life we are constantly ‘‘encountering’’ something, and at that moment we also encounter such thoughts as judgment, choice, and decision. That is to say that we can maintain our own field (space of thought) only through ‘’encounters’’. If we refuse to ‘’encounter’’ we will end up standing vacantly in front of an infinite number of coupled mirrors without noticing that their surfaces are within close reach, floating in an infinite void, as if we were someone who continues to watch anemically the sight of endless mirrors. We sometimes even feel irritated, confronted with the dilemma that we cannot create an object (work of art) or event (work of art) unless we play the role of mere spectator staring into space whose surface is seemingly kept beyond our reach. However, if those involved in this exhibition (artists, lenders of the sites, and spectators) ‘’encounter’’ squarely the events on site and hold out their hands toward the surfaces of each others’ fields (space of thought), they will surely share the feelings which exist there.

The exteriorization of ‘’encounters’’ may be said to be the objective of this exhibition.
